When jazz trumpeter Jeremy Davenport got off the road to take a lengthy engagement at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in New Orleans, he said no one seemed more surprised than his former boss — Harry Connick Jr. Davenport had traveled the world in Connick’s band, which was and remains, hot stuff.

But Connick’s loss was a boon for his adopted hometown.

Davenport, a St. Louis native, has been a headliner in New Orleans for nearly ten years. He’s still wild about Harry. And he counts Ellis and Wynton Marsalis among his most important teachers. This week on Music Inside Out, Davenport shares some of the best advice he ever got on the road and from the nation’s first family of jazz.
